Independence Day ~ God's Ideas For A Nation

Thus says the Lord:
This is the fasting that I wish:

Sharing your bread with the hungry,
   sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;
Clothing  the naked when you see them,
   and not turning your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
   and your wound shall quickly be healed;
Your vindication shall go before you,
   and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer
   you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
If you remove from your midst oppression,
   false accusation and malicious speech;
If you bestow your bread on the hungry
   and satisfy the afflicted;
Then light shall rise for you in the darkness,
   and the gloom shall become for you like midday;
Then the Lord will guide you always
   and give you plenty even on the parched land.
He will renew your strength,
   and you shall be like a watered garden,
   like a spring whose water never fails.

Isaiah 58: 7-11

  1. We must cease to do evil and learn to do loving acts of mercy. Those in authority must not only not be oppressive themselves, but must do all they can to prevent and restrain oppression in all within their jurisdiction. If we can see to give happily of ourselves God's rewards will be great.

  2. Do unto others as you would want done unto you. And then God will grant us all that we need. That we have forgotten to take care of the poor, the needy, the afflicted in an age where we take much for granted is a pity and surely and disappointment to our Father in Heaven.

  3. In the United States, today is Independence Day, when we commemorate the establishment of our democratic nation which allows people to enjoy “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” to quote the Declaration of Independence. Amid the celebration, we might take a moment to remember all people around the globe who do not enjoy these blessings due to restrictive and oppressive laws

  4. Today at Coney Island there was the annual hotdog eating contest. The winner consumed 68 hotdogs in 9 minutes. People chanted U.S.A, U.S.A - one commentator said, "People have come out here today, despite the heavy, rain to see real greatness." Good God! What a pathetic reduction of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

  5. If we look around us we will find many charitable organizations, whether they be churches, soup kitchens, outreach programs, shelters, pantries of all kinds, welfare and most of all your neighbors. If we look for goodness, we most certainly will find it in America.

  6. Sound a little threatened/defensive. I didn't write the passage - the holy prophet Isaiah did. And prophets are God's mouth-piece.

  7. I pray that I can follow these words of God spoken through this prophet. Words for all nations and all times.
