Real Life Insurance

THIS IS AN AD produced for Thailand. Life Insurance? I'd say, if we were to live this way we could insure or guarantee full and meaningful lives. Notice the ad allows for the young man's spiritual life? In this country people often lament that products are only sold by promising they'll make us younger looking, more attractive, more sexy. Here's a different value.

The film reminds me of the saying of Saint Isaac of Syria about mercy, and when Jesus tells the religious leaders "Go and learn what the saying means, 'It is mercy, not sacrifice, that I care for'." Matthew 9:13

What is a merciful heart? It is the heart on fire for the whole of creation, for humanity, for the birds, for the animals, for demons, and for all that exists. By the recollection of them the eyes of a merciful  person pour forth tears in abundance. By the strong and vehement mercy that grips such a person's heart, and by such great compassion, the heart is humbled and one cannot bear to hear or to see any injury or slight sorrow in any of the creatures. For this reason, such a person offers up tearful prayer continually even for irrational beasts, for the enemies of the truth, and for those who harm her or him, that they be protected and receive mercy.

  1. Simple, beautiful message. Great impact. It really make you wonder what has happened in America where the opposite seems to be occurring. Desperation replacing hope.

  2. This reminds me of a quote by Jack London. “A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.” People who give and never withhold even from what they need for themselves. I hope this inspires people to do more good in the world.

  3. One random act of kindness whether a smile, a helping hand, monetary donation, etc, can have a ripple effect through the day for each person touched by that random act of kindness. Be that agent of random kindness. It is truly humbling to warm the hearts of others.

  4. I saw a quote today that read "Anything that war can do, peace can do better." I pray that we can all find mercy within ourselves and promote peace in our world. If everyone could do their part to be just a little more generous, a little more helpful, a little more compassionate, the world would be an overall better place. Thank you for sharing this video. Sometimes there are good things out there and we are not aware of them.

  5. This is a wonderful video. Thank you for sending it out to us. It makes you sit back and wonder why we are so uptight about everything. I wish for my heart to be on fire for all of creation. It is so hard when you consider the biases that we read in the newspapers and see on TV. I can only offer up a prayer to be more merciful and hope that God helps me find a more compassionate path.

    1. In truth we need to offer the prayer to become more compassionate, but we also need to slow down so we're able to pay closer attention to what's going on around us - God's presence that is very close. And we need a certain distance from the things - perhaps especially media - that can dull souls.

  6. There are many forms of heroes and people who touch our lives. Sometimes they don't even know the differences they have made. You are my unsung hero Fr. Stephen. Even after your physical presence is no longer, your impact is still evident in our lives.

    1. I couldn't count the people who have touched my life over the years - among them so many good people from Maria Regina and St. Mary's: older folks so faithful, parents struggling to raise their children well, people so generous with their time and resources.

  7. I was told to look for the good in things so that I would believe that there really is good in the world. Those who only see the negative side of things, will believe only in the bad that the world has to offer. This video and your explanation of a merciful heart only proves this more to me.

  8. I am glad that you put this up for everyone to revisit. It certainly adheres to the them of mercy and your Missionaries of the Poor post. Everyone can do something, even if it to make sure a plant gets water, or a dog gets food. Giving of one's self is rewarding as we can see in this commercial. When we are emotionally fed, we are happier. Giving is receiving.

  9. This weekend's Gospel: Jesus calls himself the WAY. That's not a demand to follow some mysterious dogmatic or ethical WAY but learning to follow Christ's WAY of "giving of one's self" as you indicate here. Thank you!
