Intercessions ~ Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Monday is the Feast of St. Augustine who wrote:/ "Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, O Lord."/ We ask for our hearts to grow in confident prayer./ We pray to the Lord.

Teachers and students will return to school soon./ We pray for safety at the start of their new year./ We ask that we would be a nation of learners./ For the many people around the world who remain illiterate./ We pray to the Lord.

We pray for anyone who received bad news this week,/ news of death,/ loss,/ trouble,/ defeat or sickness./ We ask strength,/ comfort and support for them./ We pray to the Lord.

There is a great danger in ignoring hatred./ We pray to be attentive and brave in naming hatred when we encounter it./ For hearts to grow in love and justice./ We pray to the Lord.

For greater consciousness in the care of our vulnerable planet./ That we would care about over consumption,/ deforestation,/ the purity of water and air,/ the extinction of plants and animals./ May we treasure the gifts God has given us./ We pray to the Lord.

The war in Afghanistan is the longest war our nation has ever fought,/ costing many thousands of lives and many billions of dollars./ For the children of Afghanistan who have never known peace./ We pray to the Lord.
